Def Jam artist, August 08 has died aged 31

Los Angles-based singer and producer, August 08 has died aged 31.

The Def Jam Recordings artist – whose real name was Ray Jacobs – was first reported to have died in a video posted by his sister, LaSherry “Joy” McKinney on Saturday (August 26) according to the LA Times.

This was later confirmed by Def Jam, who said in a statement: The entire Def Jam family mourns the tragic loss of Ray ‘August 08’ Jacobs.”

“A brilliant songwriter, an accomplished musician and a singular artist, August will remain in our memory as a beloved colleague and friend. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones.”

August 08 started his music career as an early member of the 88rising collective, working as a solo artist on tracks such as ‘Midsummer Madness’ and more tracks for their 2018 album, ‘Head In The Clouds’.

After this, he continued to work with fellow members of the gro,p such as Higher Brothers, Joji and Rich Brian on his debut EP, ‘Father’.

88rising have said: “RIP August the kindest and most talented genius you will be missed beyond words. Thank you for being an amazing mentor and a steadfast friend through all these years. We are forever grateful to you and the joy you brought in every room, through every song. Your energy, guidance and care gave so much inspiration and strength that will be carried on always.”

August 08 went on to co-write for the likes of Justin Bieber on ‘Sorry’, DJ Khalid on ‘I’m The One’ as well as Quavo and Chance The Rapper.

In 2022, his album ‘Seasick’ was released via Def Jam and in conjunction with Jhené Aiko’s Allel Soun which featured Aiko alongside ScHoolboy Q and Joji.

August 08’s last single was released in June titled ‘Bruises’. Listen to it here.
